What is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is the breakthrough medical practice that allows patients a non-invasive remedy to a variety of conditions, including:
Cellulite
Unwanted Fat
Wrinkles and aging skin
Redundant sagging skin
Aged hands
Double chins and jaw lines
Bags under the eyes

Mesotherapy is the aesthetic medical specialty employing the technique of multiple micro injections of pharmaceutical and homeopathic medications, natural plant extracts and vitamins into the mesoderm. The mesoderm is the layer of adipose fat cells and connective tissue under the skin. The physician medically selects the solution formula most specific to treat your condition or appearance concern.

Mesotherapy was developed in 1952 by Dr. Michel Pistor in France. Micro-doses of medications are administered into targeted sites for treatment of general medical problems, evolving over time to include the cosmetic spectrum of body sculpting, cellulite reduction and skin rejuvenation, targeted fat reduction and overall weight loss. Mesotherapy is recognized as a medical specialty by the French Academy of Medicine since 1987. Today, the International Society of

Mesotherapy numbers over 15,000 physicians practicing Mesotherapy in eight countries, including France, Great Britain, throughout Europe and South America. Dr. Salah Taha brought Mesotherapy to New Jersey in 2004 after traveling to France and training with Dr. Lionel Bissoon learning this new and exciting treatment.

Mesotherapy for Cellulite
What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is that unsightly cottage cheese textured, orange -peel appearing skin. This medical condition has been one of the most difficult to understand and treat. It is viewed by most women to impact their self image and self esteem. Cellulite knows no boundary afflicting the slender and overweight, the athletic and sedentary. Cellulite is not a fat problem, it is a skin problem and it is not caused by overweight. Cellulite is caused by thick hardened connective tissue bands that hold down the skin, trapping the enlarged fat cells. Cellular water is retained, lymphatic flow restricted, venous circulation is poor, and fat cells expand and stretch. Eventually, this results in areas of the skin being held down while other sections bulge outward resulting in the lumpy 'cottage-cheese' dimpled appearance.

Fat cells in cellulite reside within the skin. They can't be burned as fuel with diet and exercise. Cellulite is hereditary; it depends on the number of septa, the fibrous bands that anchors the skin to the deeper layers. Causative factors include poor circulation, impairment of lymphatic vessels, and enlarged adipose fat cells. Contributing factors may include the weight-gain of pregnancy and poor diet and nutrition habits and hormones.

There are three stages of Cellulite:
Stage 1 No visible cellulite when standing or lying down, however present when skin is pinched
Stage 2 Visible cellulite when standing, however not apparent lying down Stage
Stage 3 Visible cellulite whether standing or lying down.

Cellulite Solutions

Mesotherapy has been a safe and successful cellulite treatment among European and South American physician practitioners for many years. It is valued among women as one of the most important cosmetic procedures and treatments in daily living. Mesotherapy solutions are medically directed treatment. Special medication "cocktail" formula based on the patient's stage of cellulite is prepared and injected into the cellulite at along the affected area. Depending on the stage, 10-15 sessions may be required. Mesotherapy benefits include:
Restoring and normalizing blood flow and improved lymphatic drainage to the affected area.
Dissolve excess fat deposits.
Removing the hardened connective tissue and eliminating the dimpling appearance of the skin. Skin appears significantly smoother, tighter and healthier.

At the Vein & Laser Center, we have pioneered combining Ultrasound Treatment with Mesotherapy to further enhance the benefits and achieve the best possible results. Ultrasound has been used to assist with liposuction by improving fat cells removal, disrupting connective tissue bands, and improving circulation. The ultrasound application is painless and is combined with message therapy.

Creams and lotions
rich in metylxanthines have been used with limited success.

Cellulite diet (rich in eggs, soy, cauliflower, peanut butter, flaxeed, olive oil, raw nuts, berries, pomegranate and citrus fruits) has been recommended with questionable value. A healthy balanced diet is essential for general health and longevity.

Light devices, Message devices: Triactive & Velasmooth. Some temporary success has been reported but most dermatologists are skeptical about the results especially long term. Same applies to High-Tech Message. These devices can be used with Mesotherapy.

Mesotherapy for Spot Fat Reduction

Mesotherapy is a cosmetic non-invasive alternative to Liposuction. For those people who want to get rid of fat without invasive procedure, or those patients who have already had liposuction, and now find themselves with fat depositing unevenly as well as more noticeable cellulite, Mesotherapy for fat loss and body contouring is the answer.

Medically formulated series of micro injections are given into the fat deposits. Therapeutic goal is to address contour specific undesired pockets and bulges of fat. Individualized “fat burning” formulas are utilized. The micro injections are directed into the areas being treated i.e. love handles, bra line, saddlebags, inner thighs, inner knees, neck, arms, stomach, etc.

A series of treatments (5-15) are given every one to two weeks. Results are considered permanent as long as the patient adheres to a proper nutrition and exercise regimen. Occasional touch-up interval treatments may be considered.

Mesotherapy and Weight Loss

More than 60 percent of American adults and adolescents have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 26% or greater indicating excessive amount of fat. Obesity results from lack of exercise and excess of food ingestion especially refined sugar. With obesity, there is an increase of the number and size of fat (adipocytes) cells. Fat cells have two kinds of receptors on the surface. Receptors that break down fat (lipolysis) are known as beta receptors, and those that create fat (lipogenesis) are known as alpha receptors. Above the waist, the number of alpha to beta receptors is generally an equal 1:1 ratio in both women and men. However below the waist, women have approximately 6 to 8 Alpha receptors for every Beta. This is the reason why it's difficult for women to lose weight in this area. Alpha receptors produce fat when stimulated by carbohydrates, fat ingestion, amino acids, hormones and alcohol.

Mesotherapy use customized formulas injected in a specific area stimulate break down the existing fat (the Beta receptors) and blocks the cells from storing fat (inhibit the Alpha receptors). This leads to breaking down the fat cells and loss of localized fat. Your body then naturally flushes out broken-down fat.

Phosphatidylcholine, a chief component of soy lecithin, has been medically proven to reduce cholesterol, increase metabolism and enhance liver and cellular functions. It is the main component in fat dissolving formulas. It has been used for many years by physicians as a safer alternative to liposuction in fat and cellulite reduction procedures. Dr. Patricia Rittes from Brazil has performed over 24,000 treatments without significant side effects.

At Vein & Laser Center, complete history and physical exam is performed followed by our computerized Body Composition Analyzer prior to initiating Mesotherapy. In addition, to obtain the maximum benefits from Mesotherapy, diet and exercise program has to be initiated and strictly followed.

Mesotherapy for Face, Neck, and hands Rejuvination (Mesolift)

Aging process causes a thinning of the skin, increase of the superficial dead layers, decrease of living deep cells, decrease of collagen and elastin fibers, decrease of structural glycoprotein, and decrease of micro circulation. This is caused by intrinsic genetically programmed factors and extrinsic factors such as sun exposure “ultraviolet radiation”, smoking, food, free radicals & stress. All that leads to progressive worsening of skin condition. Skin appears devitalized, dried, wrinkled and lax.

Mesotherapy for skin rejuvenation is a safe and natural complimentary to traditional cosmetic facial procedures. Mesotherapy infuses the dermis with vitamins, anti-oxidants, and other medications to re-hydrate the skin and stimulate the cells (fibroblasts) to produce collagen. This leads to immediate glow of the skin “mesoglow”, better elasticity and firmness, and even skin retraction “mesolift”.
Mesotherapy can also be used for skin toning and tightening of sagging skin of the neck, legs, abdomen, arms and hands. Rejuvenation is a wonderful compliment to any of the other skin treatments we offer including Laser rejuvenation, Botox and Restylane and other fillers.

Frequently asked questions about Mesotherapy
Is Mesotherapy safe?
Mesotherapy is a safe technique using all FDA approved pharmacological agents and natural plant extracts. One of the main medications used to dissolve fat is Phosphatidylcholine. This is the chief component of soy lecithin and viewed as an enzyme. One significant quality of lecithin is the ability to break down fat. Like any other injectable product, it may cause side effects or allergic reactions in some people. Clinical experience from over 8 years of regular daily use show adverse reactions to be extremely rare.

What are the alternatives to Mesotherapy?
Liposuction, is used to remove localized fat and sculpture the body. Laser, light sources, peels, Botox, and dermal fillers are alternatives for skin rejuvenation. Mesotherapy is a wonderful compliment to any of these modalities.
Cellulite treatment with message & suction devices yield inconsistent results and at best for very short period.

What are the known side effects?
Common side effects may include local pain, minor burning sensation for a few hours, and temporary bruising. Itching and soreness may also be experienced for a few days. Injection of the lower eyelid pads and chin may cause massive swelling that lasts 3 to 10 days. Allergic reaction to certain components of the Mesotherapy is a possibility.

Are there reports of failure?
Yes. In Austria, the failure rate has been shown to be 8% for clinical use.

Are Mesotherapy injections right for me?
Mesotherapy injections have shown good results for minor to medium body sculpturing of specific areas of the body like stomach area, upper arms, thighs, chin, hips and so forth. Mesotherapy has shown excellent results to smoothen and even remove cellulite. Mesotherapy is not a weight loss method, but it motivates people to lose weight. Mesotherapy has to be combined with high protein Diet & Exercise to achieve the best results. The downside with Mesotherapy is mainly that the results are gradual.

Mesotherapy is not for you if you have any of the following conditions:

Patients with bleeding dyscracias (i.e. Hemophiliacs, etc.)
Patients currently on blood-thinning medications (Coumadin, Plavix, ASAs, etc.)
Patients on insulin (i.e. Type 1 diabetics)
Patients with sever HTN or cardiac problems
Patients with HIV
Patients with severe renal disease
Patients with any debilitating condition and not deemed an appropriate candidate by the treating physician
Patients allergic to any products to be used in their particular Mesotherapy treatment
Lupus
Pregnancy & Lactation
Patients with unrealistic expectations.

Can Mesotherapy cause uneven fat loss?
Yes. But this is rare. Injections are done in small distances apart and in small doses per treatment. The time frame between treatments combined with the small doses per session provides the physician the opportunity to observe and monitor effects.

What should I expect following a treatment?
There may be minor pain, throbbing and tenderness in the treated areas with some bruising. Bruising can be reduced with Arnica cream, Arnica pills or Vitamin K cream.

How many treatment will I need?
This will vary based to the extent of fat, cellulite or skin damage to be treated. The number of treatments vary from 5 – 15.

How fast will I see results?
Results vary based on your body type and the severity of the condition. On average, based on condition, the results can be seen in two to three sessions. In some instances, patients see results after one session.
Will the result last?
The results do last. However, aging is a dynamic process. As your body continues to age, you will need to address the symptoms of aging as they manifest. Mesotherapy is used as a preventative against ravages of aging as well.

Will the fat in the treated areas return?
No, the dissolved fat has not been reported to return. But new weight gain can build up new fat in the same areas. Exercise and diet in addition to mesotherapy has shown the best long-term results.

Are there any restrictions?
General restrictions vary with conditions treated and well be discussed before treatments are administered. Patients are advised not to wear makeup for at least 4 hours after facial treatments, not to take hot showers for at least 6 – 8 hours, and not to exercise vigorously for 48 hours after cellulite treatment. Prior to treatment, patients are advised to take a light meal and to avoid caffeine.

How much does it cost?
The total cost of Mesotherapy is based upon the nature of the problem being treated, number of areas being treated and the number of sessions needed to achieve the patient’s desired results.
